As many of you will know, Lisa Trivedi has finished her tenure as President of SAHSA and passed the torch on to me and Anne Hardgrove for this year. I’m sure you’ll join me in thanking Lisa for her wonderful leadership and the great amount of time and effort she has put into the organization over the past two years.
Our first order of business for 2012 is to draw your attention to the upcoming deadline for panel submission to the AHA meeting in New Orleans next January 3-6. Proposals for panels must be received by the AHA no later than February 15 (two weeks away!). The theme of this year’s conference is “Lives, Places, Stories” but as always panels on all historical topics are welcome.
I’d like to encourage you to consider participating in the AHA next year, and if Anne or I can do anything to help you – whether it’s finding a discussant or facilitating a roundtable – we’re very happy to do that. We will hold our normal business meeting during the conference and we are also working to put together a few “inter-regional” and inter-disciplinary panels highlighting South Asia that should be of special interest to members. We are also proposing a return to holding a roundtable discussion as a part of the meeting. Finally, SAHSA is working with the Conference on Asian History on a number of related events in New Orleans which we’ll tell you about when planning is further along.
At the AHA in Chicago this past month we had a great variety of South Asia related panels and events, and congratulations most especially to Farina Mir, who won the 1st John Richards Book Prize for her wonderful book "The Social Space of Language: Vernacular Culture in British Colonial Punjab." At our business meeting we had a fruitful discussion of a number of important issues relating to the future of SAHSA. In summary:
1. A discussion of the proposal to institute membership dues led to general agreement that a modest, stepped due system for members was needed, with a maximum of $25/year for employed professionals. Such dues would be used for future website development and meeting expenses, for example. A comparison of dues charged by other similar historical organizations was also encouraged.
2. The question of a supplementary business meeting at the annual Madison conference was discussed, and it was agreed that such a meeting was an important way of bringing historically minded South Asianists into the organization, and of involving members who might not be able to attend the AHA every year. But equally it was agreed that a Madison business meeting could and should not replace the business meeting held at the AHA.
3. An administrative calendar has been drafted by Lisa Trivedi which should help SAHSA leadership to more effectively organize (and communicate to membership) South Asia related events at the AHA, AAS, and Madison.
4. The redesign of the SAHSA website, and its short-term move to Indiana University Bloomington, was discussed. This project should be completed later this spring, and the members present offered a number of suggestions for features to be included, such as ensuring a division of private (members only) and public pages; facilities for advertising conferences, jobs, etc., and enabling collaboration between colleagues on issues of research and teaching; and potentially a social networking profile.
5. A brief discussion regarding the nomination of membership to offices within the AHA was held.
