SAHSA at the AHA, January 6-9, 2011

We are looking forward to a good showing of South Asianists at the 2011 AHA. There are many South Asia panels in this year’s program so do take a close look at what the conference has to offer. We would like to alert you to several SAHSA related sessions.

Friday, January 7th AHA Business Meeting and Barbara Metcalf’s Presidential Address, beginning at 8:30 pm in Ballroom C (Hynes Convention Center).

Saturday between 8:30 am and 1:30 pm. In collaboration with the Coordinating Council of Women's Historians, SAHSA has organized two sessions (148 & 186) “South Asia and the Future(s) of Feminist Historiography: A Workshop on the Politics of Comparison.” The sessions begin with a paper by Professor Mrinalini Sinha (U Michigan) on the state of the field on South Asian gender and sexuality. Her paper will be followed by comments by a set of distinguished commentators who work on non-Western gender and sexuality (outside a South Asia context.)

Saturday evening between 6-7:30 pm in Grand Ballroom Salon C, SAHSA is hosting a discussion of the recent Ayodhya decision. “Political Religion in South Asia.” Facilitators for our discussion are Faisal Devji (Oxford U), Gyan Pandey (Emory U), and Yasmin Sakia (Arizona State U).

Immediately following the discussion, SAHSA will hold its annual business meeting in Grand Ballroom Salon C from 7:30-8 pm or so. Please join us to reflect upon the last year because we have a lot to celebrate. Bring your ideas for the organization for the next two years as we assume a new status in the AHA.
