Dear colleagues,

Welcome to the new academic year.

During the course of the summer SAHSA leadership has been working to organize
the first set of SAHSA-sponsored and co-sponsored panels at the AHA annual
meeting in January 2013. A full list of events can be found below, and as
you’ll see it is a full slate of very interesting panels. Of particular
note, we will hold our regular business meeting on Friday January 4th, in the
late afternoon, followed by a drinks reception. As well, we will be
co-hosting with the Conference on Asian History (CAH) a lunch gathering at
Muriel’s restaurant, in the French Quarter, on the same Friday. Sanjay
Subrahmanyam will be the guest speaker at this event. We’ll send more
information about this luncheon and the AHA conference later in the year.

As you are undoubtedly aware, the annual Madison South Asia conference is
coming up in a few weeks’ time (October 11-14). SAHSA will hold an
unofficial business meeting on Friday October 12th, 12:30-1:30, in Parlor
638. We will in all likelihood be offering a box lunch for $20 (I know …).
We hope to have a beta version of the newly designed SAHSA website available
to view at that time, and we will also begin discussion on effective
governance structures within the organization. An agenda for the meeting and
a further reminder will be sent in late September.

We are also approaching the time for nominations for an incoming
vice-president (2013) / president (2014). If you know someone who you think
is suitable please ask if they are willing to be nominated, and do consider
self-nominations as well. A formal call for nominations will be sent to
membership shortly.

All best wishes,

Michael S. Dodson, SAHSA President 2012
Anne Hardgrove, SAHSA Vice-President and President-Elect
